Gambling Commission claims black market risks are 'being overstated'

Sarah Gardner, deputy chief executive of the Gambling Commission, said the risks of illegal online gambling are being overstated. Betting and Gaming Council warned the illegal gambling market is growing. PwC report said customers using black market operators more than doubled in a single year. BGC supports raising standards and does not want to reverse or halt action. It does however not support policies that drive customers to the black markets. The BGTC does not want any policies brought in following the gambling review to drive people to blackmarkets. iReport.com:

DOMINIC LAWSON: The cost-of-living crisis is driving gambling addicts to risk even more

The cost of living is driving people into debt. More than two million Britons used emergency food banks in the past year. The House of Lords report found that a third of a million people are 'disordered' gamblers. The Blair/Brown administration liberalised the gambling industry in 2005. It has been a social disaster for the poorest families. David Lawson met a group of young men whose gambling addiction had devastated their lives. He believes the rise of foodbanks is linked to the issue of 'problem gambling' as well as poverty. They are a Labour party constituency. For more information, visit David's website.
