The second quarter payment for hosting Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara was another jackpot for Niagara Falls as they were handed another $5,387,008 for the city coffers.
The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) second-quarter runs from July 1 to Sept. 30 and thus far this year since April 1, Niagara Falls has collected $11,773,166.
Since Casino Niagara first opened on Dec. 9, 1996, on the site of the former Maple Leaf Village amusement park, the city has collected $206,677,161 from the OLG.
The addition of Fallsview Casino Resort on June 10, 2004, added more punch to the quarterly payments. Fallsview was originally meant to replace Casino Niagara but given the tourist destination nature of Niagara Falls, the Ontario government decided to keep both open.
While all Ontario casinos are owned by the OLG, in 2019, the day-to-day operations of Fallsview and Casino Niagara were assumed by Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment – an affiliate of the Mohegan Tribe and owner Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, who cut a 21-year agreement with OLG. It marked the company’s first Canadian properties.
“OLG continues to be a proud partner in hosting gaming communities,” said Peter Bethlenfalvy, Ontario Minister of Finance. “Municipality Contribution Agreement payments help these municipalities fund priorities such as community infrastructure, parks and recreation, and local health care facilities, benefiting families and local residents.”
