The NSW Independent Casino Commission kickstarts activities; The Star's review report to go out this month

The new NSW Independent Casino Commission came into force on Monday. It will have unprecedented powers to monitor casino activities and act against operators who engage in misconduct. New laws make casinos liable for wrongdoing and they face fines of up to AUD 100 million. The commission's first task will be to consider the findings of the review into The Star casino and its suitability to hold a license. The minister for hospitality and racing Kevin Anderson will not rush the commission chief Philip Crawford to brief him on it. He will consider it in light of new retrospective casino laws. Several Star managers resigned during the Bell review. They included chief executive Matt Bekier, CFO Harry Theodore, chief legal and risk officer Paula Martin and Chief Casino Officer Greg Hawkins.

Crown Resorts Sydney finally opens casino floor

Crown Resorts has launched its gaming floors at the Barangaroo property this Monday. It took the property 18 months to be ready for the official opening. The property had to comply with a number of regulatory demands and overhaul its C-level lineup. Gary Gill from Kroll Consultancy will be overseeing the day-to-day at Crown Sydney’s newly opened gaming floor. ILGA chairman Philip Crawford warns that the focus should not distract from the task at hand. The regulator is ensuring that casinos in New South Wales operate up to the designated standard. Crown Resort's CEO Simon McGrath is confident that they will retain their license after the monitoring period is over.
