Rishi Sunak shows support for the Gambling Act Review, says report

The UK launched a review of the Gambling Act in December 2020. The aim is to improve the law and increase customer protection. New PM Rishi Sunak is "poised to resurrect plans to curb online gambling." The review is after implementing more robust age verification and betting limits. The ombudsman will play a key role in protecting customers. Premier League clubs' betting sponsorships may not be impacted by the new regulation. MPs who have previously spoken against gambling are likely to disapprove the decision.   The review has gained some traction. It is a small but important step.

"The fact that the BGC is taking a unilateral decision to redirect 25% of future funds away from GambleAware to fund its own chosen causes could not set out more clearly why a statutory levy to fund research, education & treatment is absolutely essential"

Anger at moves to water down gambling reforms: Plans for ban on football shirt ads set for U-turn

Ministers are to water down gambling reforms. They are expected to introduce a levy on betting giants and ban gambling sponsors from appearing on Premier League football shirts. The Daily Mail has long campaigned for action to curb gambling addiction. It ruins lives and costs the economy millions of pounds. There are an estimated 409 suicides linked to gambling in England every year. Sir Iain Duncan Smith will rebel on the issue. He is a member of the all-party parliamentary group for gambling-related harm. Last week, the Betting and Gaming Council warned a flat-rate levy would tip about a third of Britain’s casinos into loss and threaten nearly 3,000 jobs.

Hannah Walker: ‘Gambling addiction has nothing to do with someone’s character’

Walker's play Gamble is about her partner's gambling addiction. She organises coffee and cake mornings for people to share their stories. Matthew Gaskell, a psychologist and clinical lead on addiction for the NHS Northern Gambling Service, believes that addiction is stigmatised and that it is portrayed as harmless entertainment. Only 2 to 3% of people with gambling addictions come forward for support. The industry tries to distance themselves from its harms and shift the burden of responsibility on the individual players to protect its profits. It's a strategy that works. According to Gasell, addiction isn't a moral failing but a weakness of will.

UK Online & Casino Revenue Reported Healthy Even with Current Pandemic Conditions

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on the gambling industry. In 2020, the gross gambling yield in Great Britain was 5.89 billion British pounds, down from the previous year's GGY of 14.12 billion pounds. The decline can be attributed to the closure of brick-and-mortar establishments and the pausing of major sports leagues. According to Statista, more people in the UK searched online for the term "casino" in May 2020 than at any other time on record. In 2021, 32.8 percent of adults between the ages of 45 to 54 stated that they took part in some form of online gambling.

The creeping hypocrisy of Safer Gambling Week

This November, Safer Gambling Week is being held. It's supposed to raise awareness of problematic gambling habits and start a dialogue between operators and customers. Last month, BGO Entertainment had its licence suspended by the G gambling commission. B GO did not make any effort to promote its safer gambling guidelines in the run-up to the week. It was forced to accept restrictions on its license and pay a £2m fine last year. The company was responsible for the suspension of BGT.com. Its social media campaign to promotes safety measures was a strategy of simply Tweeting the same image every week with a standard caption about the importance of setting deposit limits.
