Ohio's Casinos, Racinos Suffered Downward Revenue In August

Ohio’s casinos and racinos mostly showed a slide in August revenue from the month and year before, although a few racetracks were able to help video gaming terminal revenue improve slightly over August 2022.
According to monthly reports from the Ohio Casino Control Commission and the Ohio Lottery, the four casinos combined for slots and table games revenue of $82.4 million in August and seven racinos totaled $112.5 million from their gambling machines.
That total statewide gaming revenue of $194.9 million was down 4.2% from July and 0.5% from August 2022.
The casinos and racinos were similar in comparisons to the prior month, with the casinos off 4.2% and racinos off 4.3%. Compared to the prior August, however, racetracks improved revenue 0.7% from their 10,408 VGTs, while casino gaming revenue decreased 2.3%.
One casino trended positively
JACK Cleveland represented the one positive note among the casinos, with its state-high $22.3 million earned in August from 1,139 slot machines and 120 table games. That was an improvement upon $22.1 million in July and $21.8 million in August 2022.
The $22.1 million in revenue at Hollywood Casino Columbus was off from $23.2 million the month before and $22.2 million the year before.
Hard Rock Cincinnati also trended in the wrong direction, with $19.6 million in earnings compared to $21 million in July and $21.2 million in August 2022.
Hollywood Casino Toledo followed the same path, coming up last among such properties with $18.3 million in revenue. It made $19.7 million in July and $19.1 million the prior August.
Hollywood Dayton a bright spot
While Hollywood Gaming Dayton has the fewest VGTs among Ohio’s racinos, with 1,012, it was the only one to report better revenue compared to both the prior month and year. Its $13.5 million was up from $13 million in July and $12.2 million in August 2022.
MGM Northfield Park had by far the biggest win from customers, at $26 million, which was better than the $24.2 million the year prior but off slightly from $26.9 million in July.
Also doing better than a year ago was Hollywood Mahoning Valley, earning $13.2 million compared to $13 million in 2022, but that was down from $13.8 million in July.
Miami Valley Gaming, which boasts the most VGTs with 2,246, made the same $19.1 million in August as it did the year before, but that was less than its $20.2 million in July.
Eldorado Gaming Scioto Downs, the state’s other venue with more than 2,000 machines, declined significantly to $18.5 million from $20.2 million in the prior month and $19.8 million in the prior August.
JACK Thistledown also saw both kinds of decreases, with its $15.3 million in revenue less than the $16 million in July and $15.7 million in August 2022.
Lastly, the smallest revenue earner, Belterra Park, reported $6.9 million in revenue. That compared to $7.5 million the prior month and $7.7 million the prior year.
