Pennsylvania casinos post flat $390M revenue in June, but top $5B in gambling win for a first time in FY 21/22

The combined revenue generated from all forms of gaming in Pennsylvania during June 2022 was almost flat at $389.8 million, a slight increase of 0.24% compared to revenue in the same month last year. However, Fiscal Year 2021/2022 revenue, which runs from July 1st to June 30th, reached a record $5.05 billion, according to a report from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board released Tuesday. It is the first-time overall revenue for games regulated by the Board top $5 billion during a fiscal year.

Sources of gaming revenue regulated by the Board include slot machines, table games, iGaming, sports wagering, fantasy contests, and video gaming terminals (VGTs). During the month of June, Hollywood Casino at Penn National placed first among venues offering gaming at $56.9 million, a 5.9% increase from $53.7 million posted the same month last year.

The top five list is completed by Parx Casino ($52.3 million),Rivers Casino Philadelphia ($42.6 million), Wind Creek Bethlehem ($42 million),Valley Forge Casino Resort ($34.5 million). Of those venues, Wind Creek posted revenue increases of 15.5%, while Parx Casino and Valley Forge Casino Resort recorded significant decreases of 10.4% and 18.4%, respectively. Rivers Casino was also slightly down by 2.2%.

The Board has also provided a synopsis of year-over-year revenue by types of games. Retail slots in June 192.9 million, up 5.4% from June last year.Meanwhile, Fiscal Year 2022/22 gross revenue from slot machines was $2.4 billion, a 27.7% increase when compared to the $1.9 billion generated in Fiscal Year 2020/21.

Tables revenue during the month of June was $76.1 million, a slight increase of5.5% Y-o-Y. Fiscal Year 2021/22 gross revenue from table games was $1 billion, a 40.7% increase when compared to the $721.8 million generated in Fiscal Year 2020/21. The revenue amount represents a high mark for a fiscal year.

Meanwhile, iGaming slots posted $72.2 million in June, up 19.5%; while iGaming tables saw an increase of 7.7% to $28 million, and iGaming poker revenue rose by 7.5% to $2.6 million. Only fantasy contests saw a sharp decrease, down by 20.3% to $1.5 million from the same period last year. Fiscal Year 2021/22 revenue from iGaming was $1.2 billion, a 37.3% increase when compared to the $897.2 million generated in the previous comparable period.

Sports wagering in June saw a significant revenue declinewith $12.7 million, down62.7% from the same period in 2021. Fiscal Year 2021/22 revenue from sports wagering was $315.7 million, a 2.2% increase when compared to the $308.8 million generated in the prior fiscal year.

VGTs revenue increased by 6.1% to $3.5 millionin June. Fiscal Year 2021/22 revenue for Video Gaming Terminals at truck stops was $41.6 million, a 32.71% increase compared to the $31.3 million in Fiscal Year 2020/21. At the end of this fiscal year, there were 65 VGT facilities operating in Pennsylvania compared to 50 facilities in operation at the end of the previous period.

While Parx Casino led retail slots despite an 8.9% revenue drop to $31.2 million, Wind Creek Bethlehem placed first for retail table games with $18.2 million in revenue, a 30.7% increase. Meanwhile, total internet games (iGaming slots, table games, and poker) revenue was led by Hollywood Casino at Penn National, which recorded a total of $42 million of the $102.9 million in statewide revenue.

Lastly, when it comes to sports betting, Valley Forge Casino Resort took the lead with $158.1 million in handle and $5.4 million in revenue. The monthly statewide handle amounted to $393.4 million, with Hollywood Casino at the Meadows ($88.5 million handle) and Hollywood Casino at Penn National ($24.2 million handle) completing the top 3 venues for the vertical.

According to Pennsylvania’s regulator, the total tax revenue generated collectively through all forms of gaming was $322.3 million during the month of June.
