Soaring Eagle announces partnership with Detroit Lions. The casino and resort will present Power Hour on Detroit Lion game days. It will also present "Inside the Den" on the Lions TV Network. The first episode of the new network will air this week. Two more episodes will be aired during the weeks of August 15 and September 5. There will a Fan Cave on 300-level concourse and a sweepstakes for a chance to win an on-field experience at a 2022 home game. Detroit TV network is comprised of seven affiliate stations in media markets throughout Michigan and northern Ohio.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission will grant a Cedar Rapids casino a license. The commission voted down license bids in 2014 and 2017. There are concerns about the potential cannibalization of gaming revenue by a new casino. The state's regulatory philosophy has been to encourage large, pricey casino developments with multiple amenities. It's not a free market. New casinos in Nebraska, Illinois and Wisconsin will take a sizable chunk out of total Iowa gaming revenues. A study by the Innovation Group argued that a local casino would increase state gambling revenue. That would soften the revenue blow delivered by out-of-state competition.

Fred Dakota, Native American gambling pioneer, dies at 84

Fred Dakota opened a garage casino in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in 1983. Dakota was a former leader of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. He was convicted of accepting $127,000 in bribes from a New Jersey slot machine dealer. He claimed the money was an advance for a telephone lottery game. The U.S. Supreme Court used a California case to ease restrictions on gambling on tribal land in 1987. A year later, states were allowed to negotiate compacts with tribes.
