LANSING, MI -- Shannon Molina says her family can have a “fresh start” after she won a $559,200 prize in the Michigan Lottery’s Monthly Jackpot Progressive. Molina, 47, of Waterford, won the prize after being selected at random in a second-chance drawing where players earn entries by playing other instant lottery games on the Michigan Lottery website.

And while she’s thrilled with the win, Molina admits she didn’t believe she’d won the prize at first.

“When I got the call that I had won the Monthly Jackpot Progressive, I thought it was a joke,” Molina said. “I talked to the woman from the Lottery three times before I started to believe it was real. The last time I spoke to her, she setup my appointment to come claim the prize in Lansing and that’s when it hit me that it must be real.”

After visiting Lottery headquarters in Lansing to claim her prize, Molina said the money will go a long way to improving the lives of her family.

“Life hasn’t always been easy. Winning means we can be debt free and get a fresh start in a new home. It’s such a blessing,” Molina said.

With her winnings, Molina says she plans on buying a new home, paying bills and saving the remainder.

The Monthly Jackpot Progressive is funded through select online instant games where players earn one entry for every $0.50 wagered. At the end of each month, one entry is selected and the winner wins the progressive jackpot. The game launched in April 2022 and in that time, more than $3.7 million has been won by players.

The next drawing takes place on Aug. 9.

The last players from Michigan to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot is the Wolverine FLL lottery club which claimed a $1.05 billion jackpot in March 2021. With their winnings, the group plans to give back to the community.

And while they were lucky winners, it’s smart for players to check their tickets immediately as a winner worth $1 million sold in Warren in 2021 went unclaimed. The money instead went to the state’s School Aid Fund.
