It’s Alive! The new Universal Monsters Frankenstein slot machine at Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, that is.
The new slot machine by gambling company Light & Wonder was unveiled at the casino on April 27. It incorporates themes from the iconic 1931 “Frankenstein” film, thanks to the company’s license and partnership with Universal Pictures and its line of Universal Classic Monsters.
Game designer Yanis Tsombanidis wanted to create a game based on something timeless, and “Frankenstein” had those themes and the appeal he was searching for.
“I love the drama and the contrast,” Tsombanidis said. “Is the monster your friend, or is he the foe? I love the (contrast of) creation and destruction and love and hate.”
The answers to those questions will likely be influenced by the number of bonuses and how much cash the monster will give players. Like the film’s themes present in the gaming apparatus, players can also expect some iconic cinematic art and sounds.
The “It’s Alive” bonus is triggered when a player lands on an “It’s Alive” symbol and at least one monster symbol. The monster symbol is then electrocuted and awards a credit amount, a jackpot, or the grand jackpot from the prize board.
Players can also trigger a power-up bonus when a power-up symbol lands on the first reel, adding a multiplier of up to 10x to a credit or jackpot payout on the prize board. The multiplied credits and jackpots persist until any prize is won from the prize board. A free game bonus is triggered when players land three free game symbols.
Tsombanidis said he wanted to use a visually appealing cabinet, which refers to the exterior that houses the hardware of the gaming machines. He also wanted a cabinet that could actualize his vision that combined the slot machine with the film, so he chose the “COSMIC” cabinet by Light & Wonder. It features fiber-optic lighting, advanced animation, bright buttons and a 27-inch top monitor display.
“Every good story needs you to feel something,” Tsombanidis said. “So if he gives you a small prize, you’ll hate him. If he gives you a huge prize, you’ll love him, but you’ll feel something, and I think that’s important.”
The slot machine is currently available at Pechanga Resort Casino and the Wynn Las Vegas.
