Study finds Petersburg, Richmond could support casinos, separately or together

A study found that a Richmond casino would generate about $300 million and 2,000 jobs. It would also reduce the number of new jobs by about 300. The General Assembly voted in 2020 to legalize casino gambling in five cities, including Richmond. The study estimates that all four casinos would earn about $55 million less if Petersburg were to open a casino. A Petersburg casino also reduces revenue from historical horse racing operations by $46 million. Virginia's state gaming tax revenues would rise from $103.5 million to $115.8 million with a Casino in Petersburg and to to more than $130 million if an additional casino opened in Richmond, but those totals include reduced revenues at the other four.

Richmond Voters Reject ONE Casino In Virginia Referendum

Richmond voters rejected the construction of a $565 million casino with retail sports betting. The media group Urban One and Pacific Peninsula Entertainment spent more than $1 million in advertising to drum up support for the referendum. The project called for a casino to be built in an industrial area of the city where tobacco titan Philip Morris once operated. Virginia made it legal for five cities to have brick-and-mortar casinos last November.

Illinois Gaming Board selects two finalists for Chicago Southland casino. One of the bids would see the creation of a venue near the border of Homewood and East Hazel Crest. The second one would locate it in Matteson, pitched by Hinsdale businessman Rob Miller and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Regulators rejected applications from Calumet and Lynwood. Final selection for a winning bid will happen next year. It took nearly two years for the application to be submitted. Sports legend Bo Jackson and entrepreneur Dan Fischer backed the Calumbet City bid.
