This has sparked a new conflict between the state government and the Governor. A migrant worker, Pandhana Maji, 22, committed suicide at Tenkasi on Monday. Since 2020, at least 30 suicides in the Tamil state have been linked to losses in online gaming. The government established a committee to investigate the issue. In June 2022, the committee recommended banning the games. It was delayed by six weeks.

Karnataka moved the Supreme Court challenging the High Court judgment early this year that quashed key amendments to the Karnataka Police Act, 1963. Former law and education minister S Suresh Kumar has written to Union Ministers Amit Shah and Nirmala Sitharaman urging them to ban the promotion of online games involving monetary bets through advertisements, text messages, mobile calls and other forms of marketing.
