MEMPHIS, Tenn. - More than 260 illegal gambling machines have been confiscated by Memphis Police during "Operation Casino Royale", according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD).

MPD said the VICE Team operation began in July of 2022.

As of October 16, 2023, 268 illegal gambling machines, over $1 million cash and various guns and drugs had been seized as a part of the operation, police said.

The "casino-style gaming machines" were frequently installed in corner stores and gas stations in high-crime areas of Memphis, according to MPD.

Being placed in those areas, activity around these machines led to other crime such as thefts, robberies and aggravated assaults, police said.

Throughout "Operation Casino Royale" 65 investigators have taken place resulting in two arrests, 53 misdemeanors and 12 city ordinances, according to MPD.

Police said that multiple people were also arrested for outstanding warrants as well as gun and drug crimes during the investigation.
