Mohegan Pennsylvania charts independent path for online casino launch following Unibet exit

Mohegan Pennsylvania Casino Resort has decided to take control of its online casino operations after learning last year that its current online casino partner, Unibet, would be withdrawing from the North American market by this summer.

Instead of engaging in a search for a new operator, Mohegan has chosen to develop its online gambling app in-house through Mohegan Digital Services, eliminating the need for external operator assistance.

At the recent license renewal meeting with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), Mohegan presented a detailed roadmap for its online casino venture. The casino plans to soft-launch its iGaming app on March 18, followed by a full-scale launch on April 18, which will also integrate Mohegan's loyalty program, Momentum Rewards.

To ensure a seamless transition, Mohegan will proactively reach out to existing Unibet players in the lead-up to the app rollout, providing them with comprehensive details about the new platform.

According to Mohegan's PGCB license renewal presentation, the Mohegan app and the Unibet app will coexist for at least a few weeks. While Mohegan's app will continue beyond that, Unibet is expected to remain operational until June, although a specific date was not disclosed.

Mohegan said it is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for players and is working closely with Unibet to offer customers a "soft landing" as they move away from the platform. In addition, Mohegan has plans to support Unibet employees by providing job opportunities wherever possible when Mohegan's online casino is launched.

Despite being among the top revenue earners for brick-and-mortar casinos in Pennsylvania, Mohegan's online casino revenue currently ranks among the lowest in the state. As the online casino market in Pennsylvania undergoes changes, with the number of online casinos decreasing from 22 to 21 upon Unibet's exit in June, it’s not clear at the moment what effect the Unibet departure will have on Mohegan’s revenue.
