Jackpot! MI Lottery players raked in big prizes in August

(WWJ) - August was red-hot for Michigan Lottery players who won the most prizes of $100,000 or more in a single month so far in 2023, officials announced.
A total of 24 tickets bought last month paid out big prizes. The largest jackpot totaling a whopping $8.7 million was won off a Lotto 47 ticket sold in Kentwood, the Michigan Lottery said.
The jackpot ranked in as the game's ninth largest in history.
The next big prize was a winning Mega Millions ticket sold online in Freeland worth $2 million. Officials said the ticket had the optional Megaplier feature of 2x which brought the total prize to $2 million.
Most states offer the Megaplier to increase non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4 or 5 times; it costs an additional $1 per play.
Two other prizes worth $1 million a piece were won on a Powerball ticket sold in Livonia and a $1,000 Large instant ticket purchased in Detroit.
Winning tickets can be redeemed up to one year from the date of the drawing.
Michigan Lottery spokesman Jake Harris said the first thing that anybody should so when they purchase a lotto ticket -- let alone a winning ticket -- is to is sign the back of it and put their name on it.
"That's important," he advised. "Tickets are bare instruments, so you want to get your name on there and then they'll want to give our office a call to schedule an appointment to claim the prize."
While the process seems overwhelming, Harris said it's very straightforward.
"It's some paperwork, you show us your ID and Social Security card and we cut your big check," he explained.
