TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Communication and Informatics Ministry (Kominfo) cooperates with the National Police (Polri) for comprehensively tackling online gambling.

The ministry's Director General of Public Information and Communication Usman Kansong stated on Saturday, August 26, 2023, that the Kominfo minister will meet with the chief of National Police to discuss the matter, especially on the mechanisms of tackling online gambling.

"Next week, the communication and informatics minister will meet the National Police chief to discuss the mechanism for eradication, or the procedure of, eradicating online gambling," Kansong noted at a discussion titled "Emergency of Online Gambling."

Kansong explained that his side had taken various proactive steps in tackling online gambling problems, such as blocking the sites in question.

In the last five years, Kominfo has cut off access to at least 886,719 sites that contain online gambling content.

However, Kansong said blocking content alone would not suffice. He stated that online gambling is a serious problem that requires a comprehensive approach and additional steps.

Hence, he said, the ministry synergizes with various parties, including the Polri, to thwart online gambling activities.

"The meeting with the Polri chief is to discuss on how to deal with it comprehensively. We cannot just block the sites because they will appear again. We must handle them comprehensively, as this is already an online gambling emergency," he stated.

In addition to the Police, he said that Kominfo synergizes with the Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (INTRAC) to detect accounts used in online gambling practices.

He emphasized that the ministry will continue to supervise and remove negative content, such as online gambling from digital spaces.

"Collaboration is important. We have collaborated with INTRAC, banks, and the police, and we continue to intensify that collaboration," he affirmed.
