Craps: A comprehensive guide to the classic dice game
Super Slots

Craps is a fast-paced dice game, with a range of betting options and fun gameplay – it’s no wonder why it’s loved around the world!

In this comprehensive guide to Craps, we’ll look at important elements of what this game has to offer – from the basic rules of the game to etiquette tips.

History

Dice games are the oldest gaming devices around, which means this particular dice game, Craps, has an extensive history.

Going back to ancient Greek times, the writer Sophocles claims that the game of dice was invented during the siege of Troy in around 1250 BC – but dice games go even further back in history than this to 3000 BC!

Although, the roots of the game we know as Craps today lie in an English dice game called Hazard, dating as far back as the 14 century.

Although it wasn’t until World War II that Craps made its way into the casino gaming world – soldiers loved this game and often played using a blanket as the shooting surface.

The nostalgia from this time period made it one of the most popular games in post-war Las Vegas, but how do you play it nowadays?

The basics

To play the game you must know the basic equipment that’s involved in the gameplay. Craps is played with two dice and the objective of the game is to predict the randomised outcome of the roll.

There are two main phases that you should be aware of within the game – the ‘come-out’ roll and the ‘point roll’.

The first phase begins with the ‘come-out’ roll, where the player rolling the dice, otherwise known as the shooter, aims to roll a seven or 11 to win on the ‘pass line’ bet.

Rolling two, three, or 12 results in a loss and is known as ‘crapping out’ – and if any other number is rolled that number becomes the ‘point’.

Once the ‘point’ is established, the shooter’s goal is to roll the point number again before rolling a seven. If the point number is rolled the pass-line bets win. If a seven is rolled before the point, pass-line bets lose.

There are other bets to place too, but this guide is starting with the basics. And remember that this is a game of chance, so you’ll never know what the dice will show…

Etiquette tips

There are etiquette tips for all casino games and one of the main universal ones includes respecting everyone playing, whether it’s online or in person.

With Craps specifically, it’s important to respect the shooter when it’s their turn – it’s important to be considerate and not rush the process.

Remember if you’re unsure about anything, ask the dealer for help.

Another great tip is to avoid interfering with other players’ bets, as a Craps land-based table can get crowded, so respect everyone’s personal space and refrain from reaching over the table or touching other players’ bets.

The dealer is in charge, so follow their lead and allow them to handle payouts and anything else that needs to be done.
