ELMHURST, IL – Years ago, Elmhurst decided against allowing video gambling, but that does not apply to fraternal organizations.

Under Illinois law, fraternal groups can offer video gambling throughout the state.

In Elmhurst, two fraternal organizations – American Legion THB Post 187 and Elks Lodge 1531 – offer the activity.

According to Illinois Gaming Board reports, the Elks installed five machines in December 2022, while the American Legion followed suit in October with six.

In towns that allow video gambling, 29 percent of the money goes to state taxes and 5 percent to the town.

But in localities with bans, the state gets the entire 34 percent.

In the last quarter of 2023, the American Legion and Elks netted $39,633 and $4,653, respectively, in pre-tax income from the machines, for a total of $44,286. Of that, $15,057 went to the state.

With the ban, Elmhurst relinquished $2,214 in income during the last quarter. At that rate, the city is on track to lose out on $8,850 a year.

Elmhurst is among the wealthier towns that prohibit video gambling. The others include Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Burr Ridge, La Grange and Western Springs.
