Two illegal online gambling call centres raided, 19 Chinese nationals nabbed

KUALA LUMPUR: Two online gambling syndicate call centres have been crippled after police launched a series of raids at Setapak and Jalan Tun Razak here.
Wangsa Maju OCPD Supt Rajab Ahad Ismail said police conducted the operations to weed out illegal online gambling between Dec 4 and Dec 7.
"We raided three premises along Jalan Danau Saujana and Jalan Tun Razak and arrested 18 men and one woman, all from China, aged from 21 to 39.
"We also seized 15 laptop computers, 14 mice, three modems, three routers, and 49 mobile phones worth at least RM65,000," he said.
He said the syndicate would promote its online gambling activities to clients in China through WeChat, WhatsApp and QQChat.
"They would send hundreds of messages to clients in China and we believe they have been operating for at least three months.
"The syndicates rented condominium units to house the call centre and paid between RM1,500 and RM5,000 a month.
"They worked in two shifts beginning from 8am to 8pm," he said adding that all the suspects have been remanded for 14 days to help with further investigations.
He urged the public to come forward and report any suspicious activities.
"Considering the fact that these syndicates choose to set up base at luxury condominiums, residents have to play their part and inform us if they notice any strange activities.
