Online gambling in Portugal grew by 8.6% during the third quarter. The GGR in the period between July and September 2022 reached 159.1 million euros (USD 168.8 million). Sports betting captured 43.5% of this value in that quarter with 89.4 million euro. Casino games accounted for 56. 5% with 69.3 million. Active player accounts reached 771,300 as of September 30th.

Portugal's licensed operators generated €146.4 million in gross gaming revenue in the second quarter. Online gaming revenues rose by 42%, but sports betting revenue fell by 8%. New player registrations declined by 23%. Players aged between 25 and 44 represented the majority of all registered players at around 60%.

Revenue for the three months to the end of March was €158.6m (£135.3m/$161.7m). Online casino revenue was 37.5% higher than in Q1 of 2021. Online sports betting revenue increased 11.8% to €77. 7.2% year-on-year to $53.9m. Land-based gambling revenue declined 7% from last year to €53m, with 81.4% coming from gaming machines.

IGT PLC has completed its acquisition of iSoftBet. The deal is evaluated at €160 million and IGT has acquired full control over the developer.

2020 and 2021 are the pandemic years for gaming revenue. Last year, online games generated 508.6 million euros. This is more than triple the amount from gambling in casinos, slot machines and conventional bingo.

Gambling Inspection and Regulation Service (SRIJ) is the Portuguese gambling regulator. It controls, inspects and regulates all gambling activity in the country. It is also the entity that determines the public tenders for public concessions, issues licenses for online gambling entities, collects all the relevant taxes and instructs any gambling administrative offences. State-run games follow an extensive legalframework, scattered across a number of diplomas dating back from 1955.

Microgaming is entering the online gaming market in Portugal via a new partnership with the Solverde Group. The two companies formed a partnership through Prima Networks Limited. Solversde.pt is owned by the group and is licensed by SRIJ. There are five land-based gaming establishments under Solerde's control in the country. The first additions will be 28 games from Microgaming’s Indie studio partners.

Microgaming has signed a deal with Solverde Group to supply its online casino software to its Solversde.pt brand. Soloversde has more than 50 years of experience in running casinos, tourism and leisure properties. It currently operates five land-based gambling establishments and four hotels across Portugal. Its gambling website offers more more 1,200 online slots and table games as well as sports betting.
