As we head towards the publication of the government’s white paper on gambling reform, today more than 200 parliamentarians have written to Boris Johnson to call on him to “be bold” in delivering the changes that are urgently needed to prevent gambling harm across the country.

It is now widely recognised that the 2005 Gambling Act is vastly outdated. As the Conservative Party manifesto said in 2019, it is “analogue legislation in a digital age”, conceived before smartphones provided access to a mini-casino in all our pockets and before the internet provided an even larger platform for gambling advertising.

With its commitment to “levelling up” the less prosperous parts of the country, we are sure that the stark data on gambling will be a matter
