Pennsylvania is preparing to join the online gambling markets of New Jersey and Ontario and implement two-factor authentication (2FA) as a mandatory security measure. All operators must implement the new changes by December 31, 2018.

GCGB will introduce online gambling market in early 2023.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board notified licensed operators of the impending change in June. Licensed operators have time to implement the necessary modifications.

2FA Employed Every 14 days. Multi-factor authentication activated every two weeks. Independent third parties will evaluate the security of these 2FA measures and report their findings to PGCB. Operators will also be required to encrypt players’ personal information. Unibet, FanDuel and other operators in the state have already begun contacting their registered customers to inform them of the forthcoming changes.

PGCB issued the directive in the summer. New Jersey regulators mandated two-factor authentication for all forms of mobile and online gambling. The introduction of the additional layer of protection is not a response to the recent proliferation of fraud issues reported by operators. According to New York Division of Gaming Enforcement, very few to no complaints have been filed by gambling customers since the Implementation of 2FA.
