After more than a year of renovation, a new casino in Cumberland County is ready to open.Parx Casino Shippensburg is expected to bring hundreds of people to the area, and the community is hoping it's an economic driver."Very, very exciting. It's beautiful. I think that it's going to do very well here," Sarah Strohm said.Strohm is among the dozens of locals now working at the casino. The former waitress said competitive wages and opportunities for advancement make the casino an appealing career."It was definitely branching out, trying something new, getting out of my comfort zone, finally using my degree, putting it to work. Definitely having benefits, having a first big girl job," she said."One of the things we're incredibly excited about is the amount that people we're able to employ here at the property. We have about 180 to 200 people currently on site right now," general manager Kevin Brady said.The casino is hosting invited guests on Monday and Tuesday, so the new employees can get experience before the doors officially open to the public. Proceeds from this week's trial run with be given to four local nonprofits.The grand opening is scheduled for Feb. 3.The casino was built on the site of a former Lowe's. It features gaming on 73,000 square feet, with room for expansion. There are 500 slot machines, 48 electric table games and the Liberty Bar and Grill.
