NC lottery would regulate video gambling machines in bill

Bill would authorize video lottery terminals and direct the state lottery commission to permit bars, restaurants and convenience stores to install up to 10 machines. Supporters say it's time to regulate them as efforts to eliminate shadowy machine parlors often fail. Opponents say the bill doesn't eliminate the machines that are already there. The bill's sponsor estimates the number of legal video gambling machines envisioned by the law could be 70% fewer than the current illegal ones. The Sheriffs' Association opposes the measure. It's based on questions about how the share of profits would be distributed. "It just adds a large number to continue to prey on our citizens," says the group's president.
