The UK Gambling Commission has fined Camelot UK $4.16m for three failures in the mobile app. The commission will investigate further possible breaches in March 2021. All of the financial penalty proceeds will go to good causes.

The National Lottery mobile app mistakenly notified 20,000 players that their winning lottery tickets had lost. 22,210 players were charged for two tickets after buying just one on the app. The app also sent marketing messages to 65,400 people who had shown signs of gambling harm or joined GamStop’s self-exclusion list. None of them were able to buy a ticket through the mobile application.

Camelot has been fined £3.15m for not properly running the National Lottery app. The current operator will not be able to operate the lottery after the current term expires. Allwyn Entertainment will take over as the operator by February 2024 with an initial ten-year license.
