Indiana Casino in Terre Haute Breaks Ground for Projected 2023 Opening. The Queen of Terra Hautes Casino Resort is the latest Indiana casino project.

Bulldozers started moving dirt shortly after a June 21 groundbreaking to start construction of the Queen of Terre Haute Resort Casino. The project is worth $260 million and includes a casino, a 10-story hotel, 1,000 slot machines and 50 table games, and a sportsbook. Construction has been delayed due to issues with supplies and the FAA's review of flight path hazards. It's expected to be completed in December 2023. The 400,00-square foot Queen is the newest casino approved in Indiana. it's forecast to bring $190 million in annual economic impact and create 500 jobs.

Inflation and taxes are dominating thoughts and conversations. Both played a central role in the Vigo County primary election last week. Construction could begin this month on the $260-million Churchill Downs Queen of Terre Haute Casino and Resort on Terra Hautes east side. The complex is expected to take 14 months to build and could open in late next year.

Churchill Downs will move its planned Queen of Terre Haute casino from the west side of the city to the east side. The new location is more accessible, part of a growing commercial core and fits in the existing road and infrastructure plans. Queen is slated to open in late 2023 with 1,000 slot machines, 50 table games, a 125-room luxury hotel, sports book, steak house and rooftop bar. Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana opened in Gary on May 14, 2021. The company that hosts the Kentucky Derby horse race and is majority owner of Rivers Casino in Des Plaines, Illinois, was awarded the license in November.

Churchill Downs Inc. applied to rezone land for the casino on the city's east side near the Interstate 70-Indiana 46 interchange. The new site is currently farm fields near FedEx and Clabber Girl distribution centers. It would replace the original site off U.S. 41 on Terre Haute's west side. The original location was criticized as an inferior location in a lawsuit. County zoning officials are scheduled to consider the new location during March 2 meetings. Indiana Gaming Commission's board could review the change during its March 8 meeting.

Churchill Downs Inc. has filed to rezone nearly 50 acres near Interstate 70 and State Road 46 to build the Queen of Terre Haute Resort. The developer of the new casino in Terra Hautes is proposing a new location than what was originally planned. In its original proposal, the company planned to built the casino on 21 acres on the city’s west side near the Hauting City Shopping Mall and the wastewater treatment plant. Many people, including Mayor Duke Bennett and Vigo County Commissioner Chris Switzer, had hoped the project would be built on east side.

The Indiana Gaming Commission is hearing the proposals from four applicants to open a casino in Vigo County today. The applicants are Hard Rock, Churchill Downs, Full House and Premier Gaming. They have 30 minutes each to present their vision for a Vigo County casino. If the applicants receive four or more votes, they advance to the final round. Then the finalists will make closing statements and commissioners will select the winning applicant by motion and vote.

Full House Resorts has signed an agreement with an Indianapolis-based general contractor for its proposed $250 million casino and hotel property in Vigo County. The casino would be called American Place and would include a hotel and a glass "greenhouse" restaurant. It is projected to create 1,800 construction jobs and 800 permanent jobs. Full House has an arrangement to locate a temporary casino in the Haute City Center mall pending the approval of the casino license. It's expected to take 18 to 24 months. Avery Morgan is collecting signatures for a petition asking the state agency to give favor to a casino operator that provides manned poker tables.

The Indiana Gaming Commission released additional information on the four proposals for a Vigo County casino license.

Hard Rock bought a majority ownership of Spectacle Entertainment and the Hard Rancher Casino Northern Indiana. Greg Gibson is chairman of LucyLuck. The Tribune-Star has made a records request for all orders issued in hearings before the administrative law judge. The parties expect a hearing in December. It's not clear if Gibson has a share of the Terre Haute casino project.

The four companies vying for the Vigo County casino license have submitted their applications to the Indiana Gaming Commission. Hard Rock and Full House Resorts Inc. operate casinos in Indiana.

Hard Rock Terre Haute casino project license not renewed. Gary's Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana will continue operating on an interim license renewal. The commission ordered staff to reopen the license application process for a 90-day period. Lucy Luck can reapply but she must work out deficiencies. Hard Rook also operates a casino that opened in Gary last month. It was planned to open in September 2021, but two top executives had to give up their ownership stakes in the project last year amid investigations into allegations of financial wrongdoings. Terra Hautes businessman Greg Gibson took over leadership of the new project.

Hard Rock International agrees to develop and manage a "Rocksino" casino in Terre Haute, 165 miles south of the new Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana in Gary. The $170 million facility will offer 850 slot machines and 35 table games, a steakhouse, HardRock Cafe, food hall, and a 250-seat venue for live performances and other events. Groundbreaking is expected in late June or early July. It will open in summer or fall 2022.
