Legislation is expected to be introduced this month, calling for the legalization of online casino gambling in Maryland, which, if a recent poll by MDBetting.com is to be believed, has the overwhelming support of residents. Of the 1,000 people surveyed, 75% said they were in favor. There are a few factors they should consider, however.

Online gambling is one of the most addictive activities available to a free society, according to a recent study presented by the American Psychological Association. Think about going to a casino and gambling and then compare it to sitting at your desk at home and taking part. Which takes a lot less effort to begin — and keep going long past the stage of entertainment?

When gambling at the blackjack or craps table, most gamblers have a set limit in cash or an established credit line. As the betting goes on, the dealers and the other players see every bet that is made. The bettors know they are either winning or losing, but they are also being judged by everyone else. In many cases, this kind of peer pressure will subconsciously help a player know when to stop if things are not going well.

However online casino gambling is a solo activity. Nobody sees you win; nobody sees you lose. The dealer does not make a remark, your neighbor at the table does not raise a knowing eyebrow. You are completely alone, and some will continue to reach for their bank card or credit card to reload their bankroll, whether they can reasonably spare the funds or not. The excitement of playing takes over and becomes the only feeling that is worthwhile. The next day may be filled with regret and multiple lies to one’s partner, but that’s hours or days later. The reload process means the gambler has yet another chance to win. Yet that new opportunity can disappear in a matter of minutes.

As one engages in online casino gambling, doubts about the efficacy of the game start to creep in. Do “they” know my betting patterns, and do they know how to defeat me at a certain point? Is the game truly fair? If I am playing craps, do I have a legitimate chance to win, or will that 7 turn up the instant I have the maximum amount of money on the layout?

Online casino gambling doesn’t have to turn into a ruinous activity, but it can and everyone who wants to engage in it should know this is a possibility.

Take it from one who has been on the wrong side of it — somebody who has not made a bet of any kind since July 1, 2011. When the losses mount to an uncontrollable level, there are ramifications that can cost the gambler his or her finances, multiple personal relationships and self-respect.

As online gambling organizations advertise their business, these are the things that are never discussed. Disclaimers are offered for those with gambling problems, along with the 1-800-Gambler phone number, but the specifics of those problems are not shown in the commercials. Just the joy of attractive people winning their bets.

Go ahead and give the people of the state of Maryland just what they want, but make sure they know exactly what can result: Online casino gambling has dangerous implications.
