There’s never a bad time for a minor league baseball player to be promoted, but you can conceive of some ways it can be an inconvenience depending on what a player has going on when he receives the call.

Maybe they have a baby on the way or they’re on a beach trip with family, or really anything people want to enjoy without interruption.

Chicago Cubs pitching prospect Jordan Wicks added a new item to that list Wednesday when he got the bump up to Triple-A Iowa from Double-A Tennessee … just after arriving at a casino two hours away for a trip with his wife.

“25 feet from the blackjack table in Cherokee, North Carolina,” Wicks said of when he got the call.

There’s another way to look at this, though. Maybe the promotion saved Wicks from blowing a bunch of money. Instead of a two-day trip at a casino, he returned to Tennessee the next morning to pack his things and re-route to Iowa.

If anything, the promotion moved the Cubs’ No. 5 prospect a step closer to his dream job and making some real money.
