Eye On Illinois: Gambling expansion a Prairie State inevitability

Illinois legalized sports gambling in 2020. The state is considering online casino games. New Jersey's online casinos have taken in $4.79 billion over the past nine years. Pennsylvania opened for business in July 2019. Michigan reports $2 billion since the start of 2021. Bally's has won the City Council’s approval for a $1.5 billion Chicago casino. It's possible the expansion of online gambling might conflict with the plans to open a physical casino in Chicago. Illinois is moving away from a legacy of horse tracks and brick-and-mortar casinos to chase the next revenue high.

Last-minute deal averts casino strike in Atlantic City

The main union for Atlantic City casino workers reached agreements on new contracts with four casinos on Thursday. The deals avoid a possible strike on the Fourth of July weekend. A Sunday strike deadline remains against the Hard Rock casino. Union president calls it the best contract they've ever had. It's not yet clear what the exact amount is. The settlements come at a crucial time for the casino industry. They have won $1.8 billion over the first five months of this year. That's up more than 49% from the same period in 2019. In 2016, the union rejected a proposal by billionaire Carl Icahn to operate without health care and pension benefits at the Trump Taj Mahal casino, which was later sold to Hard Rommate International.

Execs: US casinos learned some useful lessons from pandemic

Executives from major gambling companies say the pandemic forced them to close their casinos for months. They say they learned useful lessons that will endure even after the disaster. The conference was held in the Hard Rock casino in Atlantic City. Some of Hard Rink's casinos offer buffets, while others don't. The pandemics also taught them how to reduce expenses. In some places, daily housekeeping of casino hotel rooms has become a casualty of the crisis. There is a shortage of housekeepers and guests don’t allow hotel workers into their rooms. It's led to the abandonment of a daily room cleaning standard in resorts.

Eric Hausler, CEO of Greenwood Racing, owner of Pennsylvania’s Parx Casino, said a restaurant that was open every day for lunch and never made any money was closed for good once the gambling venue resumed operations. He said people were fed up with being cooped up and came back.
