VIRGINIA — One Virginia player failed to capture the $1.76 billion Powerball jackpot on Wednesday night but still scored a major prize, winning $1 million as a ticket in California landed the top purse.

The winning numbers in the drawing Oct. 11 were white balls 22, 24, 40, 52, 64 and a red Power Ball of 10. The Power Play multiplier was 2X. Wednesday night's jackpot was the second-largest jackpot in Powerball history, only behind the $2.04 billion jackpot hit last November (also in California).

The $1 million winning ticket in Virginia was bought online by a person in Alexandria using the Virginia Lottery app.

During the 36 drawings of the jackpot run that began in July and ended with the $1.76 billion drawing Wednesday night, sales of Powerball tickets in Virginia generated an estimated $30.3 million in profit. By law, all of that profit goes to K-12 public education in the state, according to the Virginia Lottery.

In Wednesday’s drawing alone, more than 145,000 Virginia Powerball tickets won prizes ranging from $4 to the $1 million won by the person in Alexandria.

Along with the $1 million winner, five $50,000 winning tickets were bought in Virginia in Wednesday's Powerball drawing. Those $50,000 winning tickets were bought at 7-Eleven, 23815 South Wakefield Street in Arlington; Sheetz, 13591 Genito Road in Midlothian; Wegmans, 12501 Stone Village Way in Midlothian; Sunoco, 1899 Pocahontas Trail in Williamsburg; and 7-Eleven, 120 North George Washington Highway in Chesapeake.

The Powerball jackpot now drops to $20 million in the next drawing on Saturday.

There are more than 5,000 retailers in Virginia that sell Powerball tickets. In fiscal year 2023, the Virginia Lottery raised more than $867 million for K-12 education, making up about 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.

The odds of winning the jackpot were steep — about 1 in 292.2 million. Most jackpot winners take the lump sum — that’s $756.6 million for Wednesday’s game — and they immediately see fewer dollars flow into their bank accounts when the prize is paid out.

If the $1.76 billion prize were paid out in an annuity spread over 30 years, the IRS would claim 24 percent before the payments went out, similar to the taxes on the lump sum payment.

All but eight states — California, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming — tax big lottery prizes. In winnings over $500,000, New Jersey takes 8 percent in taxes.
