SPRINGFIELD — After a strong July, gross gaming revenue at the three Massachusetts casinos dipped in August, including a $1.9 million decrease in revenues at MGM Springfield.

The gross gaming revenue numbers were released Wednesday by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission as the three casinos continue to deal with COVID-19.

MGM Springfield, Encore Boston Harbor and Plainridge Park Casino had a total gross gaming revenue of approximately $92 million in August, as compared to approximately $96 million in July.

MGM Springfield had $21.8 million in gross gaming revenue in August as compared to $23.7 million in July. But the numbers were in line with past Augusts for MGM. The casino posted $18 million in August 2020 after reopening from a COVID-19 shutdown in July. In August 2019, the casino had $21.1 million in gross gaming revenue.

Encore Boston Harbor had $57.9 million in gross gaming revenue in August, as compared to $59.1 million in July.

Plainridge Park Casino had $12.7 million in gross gaming revenue in August, as compared to $13 million in July.

The total taxes the casinos paid to the state in August were $26.2 million, as compared to approximately $27 million in July.

MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor are Category 1 resort casinos, and are taxed on 25% of their gross gaming revenue.

Plainridge Park is a Category 2 slots facility and is taxed on 49% of its gross gaming revenue. Of that total taxed amount, 82% is paid to local aid and 18% is allotted to the Race Horse Development Fund.
