Starfield features ships, and lots of them. When you clear the initial story sequence, you come away with one of your own. It is called the Frontier, and it’s actually a decent vessel. Maybe you’ll even upgrade it to make it better. But it’s still just one ship, and you can acquire additional ones. Here is our guide telling you how to unlock more ship slots in Starfield.

Starfield – how to unlock more ship slots

When you first obtain the Frontier, you can check it out at a spaceport, such as the one in New Atlantis. The mechanic will offer to make modifications, and you can marvel at your ship’s stats. Near the top of the screen, you’ll see that you are looking at ‘Ship 1/1.’ This phrasing suggests that at least for the moment, you can’t get any more ships unless you expand the number of available ship slots. However, that’s not the case. To unlock more ship slots, simply purchase, find, or steal more ships.

If you have enough credits to your name, you can purchase more ships at a Spaceport. They tend to cost a lot. From the start of the game, early options range from the Rambler (53,614 credits) to the Shieldbreaker (260,122 credits). Those prices may vary depending on your familiarity with the Commerce skill.

Some missions reward you with a new ship. For instance, I received the UC Prison Shuttle after completing an early mission related to UC Vanguard (see our guide on how to join UC Vanguard if you want to learn more about that organization). I acquired the Razorleaf by clearing a the optional Mantis mission.

You can also steal ships. The process requires you to clear out the crew when you find a hostile ship and then hop into the pilot’s seat in the cockpit. You can then jump to another star system or land on a new planet to make it your home ship. You’ll have to pay to register the vessel if you want to treat it as your property in spaceports, however.

It’s not clear how many ship slots you can ultimately unlock. My port at one point contained five ships. I reached that number without ever purchasing one directly. I did steal and register a couple of ships, but no one needs to know about that.

Starfield is available to purchase on Steam and the Microsoft Store.
