Computer games have evolved greatly since the first titles were released in the early 1970s. In-game music is now a booming industry in its own right.

Rally-X was the first arcade game to have an in-game soundtrack. Dance Dance Revolution is a new genre of games with a soundtrack that is the game itself. There are national and international DDR championships today. The games are still produced and sold. They are popular around the world.

The first home video game with a theme tune was Atari 2600's Pitfall II: Lost Caverns. The release of Nintendo's Game Boy brought Korobeiniki, a Russian folk song, to a global audience. A-Type is the main theme music from Tetris. Final Fantasy is well-known for its incredible soundtracks. Guitar Hero is to the games console what Dance Dance Revolution is for the arcade. In 2005 Harmonix gave the world GuitarHero. It sold 5 million units globally and was worth in excess of 2 billion US dollars.

Online gaming can be about massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) or online casino gaming. One of the earliest MMORPG's to place an importance on music was Habbo Hotel, first released in 2000. Notable fan favourites with award-winning soundtracks include Guild Wars 2, Elder Scrolls Online and World of Warcraft.
