Winners have 180 days to claim their winning ticket before it expires, and winners have the option to remain anonymous. A lottery spokesperson said that when someone wins this kind of a jackpot they sometimes come right into the Rocky Hill office to claim their winnings, but other times people like to get all their ducks in a row, take care of all the legal business, then go in to claim the jackpot.

Since winning this kind of money can be life altering, the Connecticut Lottery offers these suggestions.

  1. Sign the back of the ticket so no one else will be able to claim it's theirs.
  2. Go see your tax advisor, and if you have one, your investment professional.
  3. Decide if you want to take the lump sum, or take the annuity payments over the course of a number of years.
  4. Come to the Lottery Headquarters prepared to make sure you set yourself up to enjoy the win.

When you play the lottery, the overall odds of winning a prize is 1 in 24.9, but the odds of winning the Powerball Jackpot is 1 in 292.2 million.
