Will Japan Ever Legalize Gambling?

Japan has a prominent gambling culture despite most forms of betting being illegal in the nation. There is a demand for lifting restrictions on wagering on the East Asian Island.

You can legally gamble in Japan, but there are restrictions on what you can wager on and how.   For Japanese gambling enthusiasts, the idea of having no legal means to bet online is incomprehensible.

Gambling in Japan is legal only for public races and lotteries. In 2020, the Casino Administration Committee was founded in the country. This group will monitor and manage integrated resort operators. It will eventually have the power to grant gaming licenses to resorts in this country, which is a positive step.

The Yakuza operates illegal casinos and betting parlors in Japan. Some of that group's reach extends to pachinko.

Japanese people enjoy gambling. Players spend more money on pachinko than the combined revenues of Las Vegas, Macau, and Singapore. Some shops pay out cash for playing pchinkos. The government is considering legalizing gambling in Japan. It's not easy to do. Pachinksi is a pseudo-gambling game that pays out tickets to be exchanged for items such as stuffed bears, ornaments, candy.

Will Japan ever legalize gambling?

Gambling is banned in Japan, but the country's lawmakers are considering lifting the ban. The revenue from gambling is the main reason why it's not already legal. Almost all the revenue is taken by the Yakuza, an organized crime group. The government would like to retain a portion of the money from the gambling industry.

New Casino Resorts are on the way. Japan’s Integrated Resort Development Act was signed into law by former PM Shinzo Abe in 2018. The commission is seeking funds to drive the commercial gaming industry. Online gambling is out of the picture. Online casinos in Japan might see the light of day. It all depends on domestic policy regarding betting. If China continues its assault on citizens having access to legalized betting, then online casinos might be possible. However, it's unlikely. Some estimate purpose-made casinos and gambling venues could take in upward of $20 billion annually.

Will Japan legalize gambling? Opening integrated resorts and casinos will be a step in the right direction. The ins and outs of Japan’s online gambling jurisdictions are complex. For those of us lucky enough to be in a position to gamble online legally, we don't have to worry.
