Caesars Entertainment and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians announce a partnership on the $650 million Caesers Virginia project. Construction is scheduled to begin this week on Danville, Virginia. Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino opened in fall of 2015 with 50,000 square feet of casino space with 1,050 slot machines, 70 table games, and a food court-style dining area. In 2018, the tribe completed a expansion to add 41,00 square ft of entertainment space featuring bowling, arcade games and full-service restaurant.

Catawba Indian Nation opened the first phase of its planned $273 million Two Kings Casino Resort last week. It is a 500-slot machine facility in Kings Mountain, 35 miles west of Charlotte and two-hour drive from Greensboro. Gambling at tribal casinos had a $1.76 billion economic impact in North Carolina during pandemic-stricken 2020. An estimated 172,333 North Carolinians have a gambling problem.

This would be the Tribe's first foray into commercial gaming. Saunaoke says the purchase is irresponsible and against the Tribal Charter. The protest was sent to Tribal Chairman Adam Wachacha on Dec. 30, 2020. It will be heard for the first Tribal council session on Thursday, Jan. 14.
