HARRIS — A suicidal Escanaba man who climbed part of the construction site at the Island Resort & Casino was taken into protective custody Sunday, after negotiators talked him down.

According to a press release from the Hannahville Tribal Police Department, the 34-year-old man entered a construction site and climbed a construction elevator mast Sunday. The elevator mast scales the outside of the approximately 122-foot-tall Island Resort & Casino hotel.

Three members of the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office Negotiator Team spoke to the man from the roof of the hotel for approximately one hour and fifteen minutes before he agreed to come down. An elevator operator from Gundlach Champion them used the elevator and lifted law enforcement and members of Menominee Fire/Rescue to the top of the elevator mast to place the man in protective custody and bring him to safety.

The Hannahville Tribal Police was assisted by Menominee and Delta County Dispatch Centers, Menominee County Sheriff’s Department, Menominee County Sheriff’s Department Negotiator Team, Michigan State Police, Menominee Fire/Rescue, Escanaba Township Fire Department, Harris Township Fire Department, Bark River Township Fire Department, Rampart EMS, Hannahville Behavioral Health, Gundlach Champion Construction, and the Island Resort & Casino security, maintenance and surveillance departments.
