Steelers Release Veteran Slot Corner Arthur Maulet

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released veteran cornerback Arthur Maulet, cutting ties with both of their top two slot cornerback options from the beginning of training camp before the season started.
Maulet’s release came one week after the team waived Antoine Brooks Jr. with an injury designation. Both players had been vying to replace Mike Hilton as the team’s top slot corner.
Instead, it appears that Cam Sutton will inherit that role, moving in from outside cornerback when the team goes to five defensive backs. James Pierre is Sutton’s likely replacement on the outside.
In addition to Brooks’ hamstring injury, Maulet also dealt with an ankle injury suffered in the team’s third preseason game against the Detroit Lions that hampered his cause.
Maulet played in 11 games with the New York Jets in 2020, making five starts and lining up all over the defensive secondary, with 247 snaps at slot corner, 109 at free safety, 27 as a box safety and 15 as an outside corner, per Pro Football Focus. He previously spent three seasons with the New Orleans Saints.
Maulet was among 14 players removed from the active roster on Tuesday as the Steelers cut down to the NFL-mandated 53-man limit before the 4 p.m. deadline.
The Steelers also cut guard Rashaad Coward, running back Trey Edmunds, guard B.J. Finney, cornerback Mark Gilbert, tackle Chaz Green, tackle John Leglue, outside linebacker Cassius Marsh, tight end Kevin Rader, outside linebacker Quincy Roche, running back Jaylen Samuels, safety Donovan Stiner and wide receiver Cody White.
Additionally, quarterback Josh Dobbs was placed on injured reserve.
