A new survey has revealed that almost 81% of respondents would support legalizing gambling and allowing foreign firms to construct and operate at least one Las Vegas-style casino resort in Thailand.

Thailand does not allow any forms of legal casino gaming. The worsening economic climate in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic prompted the PM to establish a special cross-bench body that is investigating a variety of measures.

Jakkapon Tangsuttitham is a member of Parliament for the opposition Pheu Thai political party. He is the spokesperson for Casino Committee of Thailand. According to him, 57% of people surveyed support Bangkok as the place to build a casino resort.

As to what any future casino resort should additionally feature, 64% of respondents expressed their desire for shopping while 40% wanted a spa. 39% requested that the facility play host to a bank or financial institution. 37% were happy for just a gambling-only project.

The Casino Committee of Thailand's poll found that 55% of respondents are worried about the prospects of a new casino resort increasing crime and 53% anxious over rising debt.

The Casino Committee of Thailand is conducting seminars in areas that could be selected to host the nation's inaugural casino resort.

The Casino Committee of Thailand intends to submit the survey findings to the President of the country’s National Assembly on July 27.
