Ontario Online Gambling Expands With Several New Licensed Operators

There are now multiple Canadian online casinos and platforms for online sports betting in Ontario. The launch marks the first significant change in Canada since the nation repealed its prohibition on single-event sports wagering last year.

There are 28 new online gambling companies licensed in Ontario. Some of them are already fully operational. DraftKings has regulatory approval but hasn't launched yet.

Ontario In Canada Opens up for Online Gambling

The launch of the new gambling market in Ontario was delayed for 3 years. The province will be regulated by the iGaming Ontario and issue licenses to top gambling operators and suppliers. Before the launch, the province had issued a series of licenses, thus approving a host of major brands to carry out operations in the Ontario. Some of them are FanDuel, PointsBet, Bet365, Rivalry, TheScore, and Rush Street Interactive. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario will resolve any outstanding issues that are yet to be resolved. All online casinos that applied for registration before 4th of April were required to suspend operations.

The British Columbia Lottery Corporation expects enhanced opportunities from the legalization of single-event sports gambling last year. Ontario’s new iGaming market is set to launch on April 4. The BLCL reported CAD $430 million ($338.1 million) net income in 2020-21. It hopes to improve the figure to CAD. $1.2 billion ($943 million), this year and CAD$1 billion (CAD $ 1.4 billion) by the next.

Casino company urges Ontario give them exclusive rights to igaming

Great Canadian Gaming wants to give casinos exclusive rights to take bets online for at least two years. The company commissioned a report that it shared with the government. It predicts 2,600 lost casino jobs and $2.8 billion less in tax revenue over five years if Ontario opens up the market for online gambling and sports betting. Other igaming companies disagree with that and say the industry is already overburdened by foreign-owned grey market gaming companies. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. is currently the province’s only option for legal online and sport betting and it was expected to launch in the first quarter of this year.
