Metro Police today unveiled a first-of-its-kind public safety kiosk on the Las Vegas Strip to bolster relations with visitors as tourism rebounds, even amid the lingering coronavirus pandemic.

Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo, Metro Capt. Dori Koren and dozens of officers and volunteers were on hand to unveil the 570-square-foot community center at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Lombardo said he hopes the kiosk, which is staffed and operational, is the first among others along the Strip, though there are no immediate plans for more. The idea came from similar kiosks in tourist destinations like New York City, he said.

Land for the kiosk, just north of Resorts World Las Vegas, was allotted to Metro during development of the the north Strip casino, which opened June 24.

“As the newest property on the Las Vegas Strip, Resorts World Las Vegas is a committed community partner,” company President Scott Sibella said.

“This new community safety hub is a great opportunity for visitors, locals and Metro to positively engage one another, and we are hopeful that this kiosk will fulfill the vision as an important community resource that enhances the visitor experience,” Sibella said.

With some 40 million people visiting Las Vegas each year, the kiosk will provide a space for officers to engage with the public, answer questions and complete minor tasks.

“I truly believe that the future of policing in any way is going to require this concept of co-producing public safety,” Koren said. “In other words, the police cannot do it by themselves, nor should they. It should be a community effort. Whether it’s private-public partnerships like this, or its members of the public that come together and help us in other ways.”
