Gambling in Austria is fostered by the appropriately-named Casinos Austria International (CAI) Group. This behemoth in gaming operates some 48 land-based and shipboard casinos, with a total inventory of over 7,500 machines and 750 table games.
In the home country, Casinos Austria was fortunate enough to enjoy a monopoly in providing casino gaming throughout Austria from 1967 to just recently. Despite CAI’s excellent record in the sphere, the European Court of Justice would hardly allow such a state to continue existence. Citing European Union free-trade regulations in 2010, the court handed down demands that Austria liberalize its licensure procedure for land-based casinos.
In response, the Austrian government has since amended the relevant law and some 15 licenses – up from 12 – may now be issued to would-be casino operators.
