Ireland could soon implement new gambling marketing rules

The Committee of Justice recommends a ban on the showing of gambling marketing on television before 9 pm. The recommendation is far stricter than in the neighboring United Kingdom.

Advertising suggestion was made as part of the Joint Committee on Justice Report on Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of Gambling Regulation Bill. Report is purportedly likely to influence the language of coming G gambling regulation bill.

Ireland could soon implement new gambling marketing rules. Automated software that would verify the age of punters who register for an online gambling account and background checks on applicants so as to ascertain their ‘financial vulnerabilities’ are among the recommendations.

The Committee of Justice examination advised the government to further evaluate the links between sports and gambling advertisements. The exercise also promoted the introduction of stake limits on sportsbetting.

The minister leading the Gambling Regulation Bill consultation process, James Browne, last year indicated that retail sportsbooks may be asked to change the way they market their wares.

James Lawless is the Chair of the Committee of Justice. He is concerned about gambling advertising, fixed-odds betting terminals and the self-exclusion scheme for gamblers.
