iGaming in Canada: Ontario's internet gambling market debut

Ontario became the first jurisdiction to approve online betting as of April 4. It is now possible in Ontario to enjoy online games, sports betting and other App game activities.

Ontario is emerging as a competitive market for online sports betting. New regulations allow bets to be legally accepted from within Ontario by private operators, rather than just the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. BetRivers hired 50 people in Toronto to take care of operations in Ontario. PointsBet Canada hopes to inspire other provinces to consider a regulated legal framework. The company operates online stably and legally in several areas of the United States.

There are 25 betting operators registered with iGaming Ontario. Several more will enter the market. 13 of them have already entered into an operating agreement with the AGCO. iGO is the governmental and auxiliary agency of AGco.

13 operators are eligible to start operating legally in the Canadian province of Ontario. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Canada expects the number of participating operators to increase in coming weeks. Gamblers must be at least 19 years of age to register and start betting on the sites in Ontario’s new iGaming market.

The Ontario government has introduced new legislation regulating online gambling. The previous situation of online slot games in Ontario was regulated. Some estimates estimate the first year's revenues of up to $800 million. The government hasn't budgeted any revenue from iGaming Ontario activity in the revenue forecast. More information will be forthcoming as the province prepares its annual budget this month. iGambling Ontario is a useful tool to counteract the activity of offshore and out-of-province websites.

There are concerns about the new legislation in Ontario regarding internet gambling. Land-based casino operators fear that many people will move to online casinos. Bethlenfalvy says the iGaming dimension is a complement to land- based gaming activity. The goal is to provide additional opportunities for land based casinos to differentiate their offerings by cross-promoting online and physical gaming operations.

The province of Ontario is working to offset and counteract the potential harm caused by gambling. Alcohol and Gaming Commission has established harm reduction models. Each site has to monitor players using these platforms and offer 24-hour customer support resources.
