The Kirov Ballet School has been in the news lately due to its connection with a gambling embezzlement scheme. The former comptroller of the Washington DC school recently pled guilty to defrauding the business out of $1.5 million, using the money to fund her gambling habit.

Sophia Kim, 60, worked as a comptroller for the Unification Church. She used her position to gamble and pay off debts. Kim was previously prosecuted for embezzling from the Korean Cultural and Freedom Foundation. She was sentenced to two years in prison. Now she was hired by the Church again and took charge of the finances for a dance school.

Kim stole over $1.5 million from the bank accounts of the ballet school. She used credit cards, debit cards and checks to steal the funds. Kim was arrested in November 2019 at the MGM National Harbor. Her sentencing is scheduled for September 15, 2021. She could spend up to 30 years in prison and be fined up $1000. The charge carries a fine of up $ 1 million.
