Casino Night returns to help women’s shelter

BREVARD COUNTY — Supporting a cause has never been so fun, Serene Harbor is bringing back Casino Night after a successful first year before the pandemic.
Tickets are still available at $100 per individual for adults 18 years and older, and all of the proceeds go directly to serving the community.
This year’s fundraiser is scheduled from 5-9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16 at the American Muscle Car Museum, 3500 Sarno Road, Melbourne.
“Our venue is amazing, [the American Muscle Car Museum] only opens up for nonprofit events and you have to have a ticket to get in,” said Georgia Gordon, Serene Harbor’s marketing and fundraiser coordinator.
“We’re excited to have some cool prize packages, live DJ, and food and drinks included in the ticket,” she continued. “It’s definitely going to be a fun night.”
Serene Harbor Inc. is a domestic violence shelter that provides everything from case management, legal advocacy, safety planning, relocation assistance, community education, professional training, support groups, prevention programs and children’s programs.
The nonprofit has partnered with Aces Wild Entertainment to provide the gaming tables, but you don’t have to gamble to have fun.
The night will feature a silent auction and a presentation by a guest speaker who is a domestic violence survivor.
Even through the past few months dealing with the world of COVID, the phones never stopped ringing, Mrs. Gordon said.
While many people have switched to online conferencing, Mrs. Gordon said reports of digital abuse and cyber bullying are rising.
Serene Harbor decided to invest in software that allows domestic violence survivors to text the hotline confidentially.
“It can’t be tracked or hacked, so when they text the hotline number they get a link to a secure chat,” Mrs. Gordon said. “They can communicate with an advocate to get the resources they need and to safety plan in the moment. As soon as they exit the message, it erases the entire conversation from their phone and also on our end.”
For nearly 30 years, Serene Harbor has offered emergency assistance to the community. The community can help in return by making a donation or purchasing items from the nonprofit’s wish list.
