The bill restricting gambling advertising in Armenia was approved in its first reading on Friday. 56 MPs voted in favor of the proposal, 8 voted against it and 16 abstained. The bill proposes to change the way gambling companies advertise in the country. It restricts gambling ads to hotels with 4-star rating and to border checkpoints.

The proposal follows a similar legal frame adopted by countries such as the Czech Republic, Latvia, Estonia and Georgia. In 2020, there were 1.9 trillion bets made in Armenia. The number of bets increased nearly 1,5 times in 2021. In 2018, lawmakers changed the gambling age restriction from 18 to 21.
