FREDERICKSBURG, VA — A retired Marine from Fredericksburg had a very lucky day last month. Anna Muldowney won a $150,000 prize in July, according to a news release from the Virginia Lottery.

The prize came from the Virginia Lottery's online Champion's Gold game. Muldowney received her winnings and her oversized check last month, the lottery said. Before leaving, she struck a victorious pose with the customary check.

Champion's Gold is one of the Virginia Lottery's instant-win games that can be played online. The Virginia Lottery now offers more than 30 such games that can be played on phones or other devices, according to the news release.

Muldowney told lottery officials that prior to the coronavirus pandemic, she preferred to visit casinos to spend her time and take a shot and winning some cash. However, when casinos shut down during the pandemic, she learned about the online games offered by the Virginia Lottery.

For Muldowney, playing online paid off. "I was winning, and then all of a sudden I saw I'd hit it," she told lottery officials. Just like that, she had won the $150,000 prize.

Muldowney, who is retired, said she did not have any immediate plans for her 6-figure winnings.

The odds of winning the top prize in the Champion's Gold game is 1 in 3 million. The odds of winning any prize in the game are higher: 1 in 4.74.
