(WFXR) — A Chesapeake resident was one of more than 95,000 winners awarded a cash prize from the Virginia Lottery in last week’s Mega Millions drawing.

Virginia Lottery officials tell WFXR News that nearly 100,000 people across the Commonwealth were awarded on Friday, July 22 after the Mega Millions drawing. Among the winners, a Chesapeake resident won $1 million by matching the first five numbers to the ticket they purchased online.

The odds of matching the first five numbers are one in 12,607,306, while the odds of matching all six numbers are 1 in 302,575,350 officials say.

To win the jackpot in the Mega Millions drawing, your card must match all five numbers plus the Mega Ball number.

Although a prize of $1 million was awarded, nobody matched all six numbers. This means the next drawing on Tuesday, July 26 will have an estimated reward of $790 million. The winner of the jackpot will have the choice of the full $790 million before taxes, paid annually over 30 years, or a one-time payment option of $464.4 million before taxes.

The Virginia Lottery online gives players the ability to purchase Mega Millions, and many other tickets and games available only online. You can visit the Virginia Lottery website for more information.
