Review: Sir Winsalot, First Past the Post

Another month, another couple of games from Microgaming software providers; this month’s additions from the big company to the online slot world, Sir Winsalot and First Past the Post, are a couple of efforts fairly representative of the Microgaming range.

LCD sat down at 5-reel, 20-payline Sir Winsalot first, a Medieval-themed gamed with all the fun loving symbols what you’d expect from our envisioning of regal life back in those days: Gold (and beer) toting knights; damsels, naturally; a dude with lute; and a pig at banquet table that eeriely comes to animated life with a winning spin. (Still hungry?) For a bonus groaner, the stein character is helpfully marked PARTY ALL KNIGHT; the whole thing is set against a pastiche of merry medieval music to keep things, um, rocking.

Or at least Microgaming tried, for, despite all the merriment, LCD just couldn’t stay interested for long in a game lacking in truly dynamic action. Sometimes, it seems, less can be more.

As in First Past the Post. This online slot set in the horseracing milieu is at once more minimalist in feel yet somehow more exciting than its royal cousin. First Past the Post is a quiet game, with the reels just politely clicking into place with the sound effect characteristic of Microgaming.

The symbols are pretty typical, with champagne, betting slips and the like alongside the A-K-Q-J-10-9 run in monochrome. (The As and Ks even have little ribbons – awww, how cute!) Plus, you gotta love the gamble feature available on every winning spin (once again, remember LCD’s rule: Go with red. It’s always red), especially since sometimes it seemed like LCD couldn't get a damn thing to line up before finally hitting the free spins feature. Put the three differing horsie symbols anywhere into position on the middle three reels to earn said spins.

Of the two new Microgames, First Past the Post is clearly your winner, a nice diversion from its far noisier cousin Sir Winsalot... LCD ratings: Sir Winsalot, 6/10. First Past the Post, 7/10.
