Doo-Wop Daddy-O slot by Rival isn't the best slot song on the jukebox but it isn't the worst. As a die-hard fan of the 50s diner, I have to say I was a bit disappointed as the 50’s were a golden time in American history so they should be as well on the reels.
Although neon and typical diner images prevail, like an Elvis-lookalike greaser, two diner darlings, a jukebox, and some old 45’s, roller skates and a diner attendant in thick-rimmed glasses and a red-bowtie, Doo-Wop Daddy-O slot isn’t super swell. There are chances to win extra coinage in two bonus rounds, a motorcycle scatter and a wild diner neon sign, but the design and look only skate by in terms of originality.
5 reels and 20 ways to win with music and diner sounds that bring players into the diner experience nonetheless with the sound of the neon sign buzzing like a mosquito getting zapped in a bug light. As for bugs, this summer was a particularly bad one for mosquitoes so I have to admit I’ve come to loath that sound and didn't warm up to this Rival slot as much as I'd hoped to.
It isn’t worthy of harsh criticism, but it doesn’t deserve any particular praise either. Both bonus rounds are weak with a drag race that involves shifting gears and honking your car horn with no real effects to go with it. The soda fountain bonus round wasn’t the way I would have liked it either. I would have enjoyed making my own soda and ice cream drinks but instead someone comes to the counter, orders a drink or desert and then I am directed to make it for them. It reminded me of a Sesame Street activity rather than an interesting interactive bonus round.
Hopefully another gaming software designer will run with the diner theme and come up with one far better than Doo-Wop Daddy-O so let's blow this popsicle stand until then.
